Thick section of mammalian brain, gold stained for astrocytes (star-shaped neuroglial cells). Note some cell processes appear to be attached to the walls of capillaries and they are thought to bring about some kind of metabolic exchange between the blood and neurones, to which they also have attachments. Horizontal field width is 120 micrometres.
