Vibrio cholerae

This is a high power view of a smear made from a culture of Vibrio cholerae. The typical comma shape of the Gram-negative rods is clearly visible. Gram stain.

All serotypes appear similar under the microscope but only V. cholerae O1 and O139 cause epidemic cholera. The V. cholerae O1 serotype is divided into two biotypes: classical and El Tor. Each biotype is divided into three serotypes: Ogawa, Inaba and Hikojima.
