Molecular model showing the structure of DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid). DNA is found in all living cells and contains the hereditary genetic instructions for life. DNA is made up of a phosphate and deoxyribose sugar backbone attached to nucleotides. DNA contains four paired nucleotides: A, T, G, and C – adenine is complementary to thymine and guanine is complimentary to cytosine. This is known as complimentary base pairing and results in the characteristic double helix shape. The information within DNA is determined by the order of these nucleotides, a specific sequence that codes for a protein is known as a gene.
