Part of the cell wall (green) and cell membrane (or plasma membrane; green) has been cut away to reveal the organelles present inside. At the right of the cell lies the nucleus (orange/brown) which contains the nucleolus and genetic material (DNA packaged into chromosomes). Nuclear pores or holes in the membrane allow DNA to pass out of the nucleus into the cytoplasm. Rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER; involved in protein synthesis and packaging; green), smooth endoplasmic reticulum (SER; involved in synthesis of lipids and steroids; green), golgi apparatus (also called golgi complex or golgi body; transports, modifies and packages lipids and proteins; violet), vesicles (membrane-bound transport vehicles which carry cargo; blue), ribosomes (involved in protein synthesis; green), mitochondria (power plant of the cell; red), vacuole (fluid filled sac used to store nutrients and create hydrostatic pressure; purple), chloroplasts (site of photosynthesis; green ovals), stroma (site of light-independent reactions within chloroplasts; yellow) and a plasmodesma (small channel that connects the cytoplasm of neighbouring plant cells used for transport and communication; green) are also depicted.
