This is an image of human scalp tissue showing the hair. It is a thick section, cut at a right angle to the skin surface. The preparation was labelled ‘scalp of N Zealand native’ and is probably 19th century in origin.
The colours have been produced by imaging the section using crossed polarized light and a whole wave (lambda) plate. The yellow streaks are the arrector pilae muscles which serve to make the hair ‘stand on end’.
